Ankura has a longstanding partnership with Her Justice, a nonprofit organization that stands with women living in poverty in New York City by recruiting and mentoring volunteer lawyers to provide free legal help, and by addressing individual and systemic legal barriers. Ankura’s Co-President Kevin Lavin has been a member of the Her Justice Board of Directors for over five years. In that capacity, he works with Her Justice on strategy and fundraising and he also sits on the Audit & Finance Committee. Many of Ankura’s professionals worked on Her Justice pro bono litigation matters prior to the inception of Ankura. Taking the partnership further, Ankura aligned with Her Justice in 2017 to provide pro bono litigation consulting and forensic accounting services to Her Justice clients.
Each year, Ankura joins hundreds of participants in the Her Justice Story by Story event to raise awareness of the challenges faced by their clients. Ankura professionals climbed thirty-one stories of the Old Slip Skyscraper in 2016 and thirty-four stories of the historic Helmsley Building in 2017 to raise awareness and donations to enable thousands of women to access the legal system. The 2017 event raised over $500,000 to provide free legal help for women living in poverty in New York City.
Her Justice is a nonprofit organization that takes a ‘pro bono first’ approach to the provision of legal services to women living in poverty in all five boroughs of New York City. The staff of 18 lawyers and legal assistants, supported by hundreds of volunteer attorneys from the private sector, ensure that more than 3,000 women every year receive free legal help in family, divorce, and immigration matters.
