Dan Hopp is a Senior Director at Ankura based out of Nashville. He has eight years of experience in structured data solutions and data cleansing.
Experience
Since joining Ankura, Dan has worked in different parts of the electronic discovery process, namely collection, processing, analyzing, and production of structured data. He has experience with data parsing, data visualization, record linkage, and procedural programming and has helped collect and analyze forensic evidence from various hardware. He also serves in an advisory role to companies looking to improve data structure and policy.
Dan’s professional experience includes:
Financial Services
- Mortgage-Backed Security Litigation: Aided in the collection, normalization, validation, processing, and production stages of the electronic discovery process for structured data from over 40 mortgage servicing systems. Data was collected in both a relational database format as well as structured flat files. Dan helped improve query runtime in the processing stage with use of dynamic SQL and Oracle query scripts. Dan currently oversees the entire project work stream and continues to manage and maintain large amounts of structured data while servicing clients with ad-hoc requests.
- Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act Preparation: Assisted in a large-scale investigation of a foreign financial institution in preparation for new FATCA regulations. Ankura provided a full scope investigative review of all account holders to identify U.S. indicia and prepare the client for new anti-money laundering (AML) regulations imposed by the IRS. Dan helped manage the collection and validation of data from banking systems and SWIFT messages using Microsoft SQL Server and Python for data parsing. He also identified like-party financial wires via fuzzy string matching by using string metrics.
- E-discovery Investigation: Investigated the data flow between source and archival systems at a financial institution used to monitor electronic communications between brokers per FINRA regulations.
- Regulatory Compliance Advisory: Advised a global financial institution on data structure and policy across existing and new compliance systems. Assessed data sourced from KYC, SAR, and other compliance systems and processes related to the Bank Secrecy Act and the U.S. Patriot Act’s Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC). Developed data pipelines to contribute to automated reporting and visualizations of compliance status for the executive committee.
Healthcare
- HIPAA Database De-Identification: Ankura received a detailed healthcare case study database used to report adverse events relating to the firm’s array of drug products. Dan created relationships between database tables and optimized the database for text searching on in-scope products and adverse event keywords to limit the scope. The narrowed data was carved into a new database and went through a de-identification process based on the HIPAA safe harbor standard.
- Fraud Claim Investigation: Assisted in a programmatic search of text within clinical notes attached to claims submitted under Medicaid and Medicare within an international healthcare group. Search results were used to determine the likeliness of a provider who performed the work not matching to the provider submitting the claim for billing. Results of this search process aided counsel in response to the investigation requests from the Assistant United States Attorney’s Office.
- Claims Sample Analysis and Litigation Response: Ankura was retained to replicate a sample set created by an expert hired by opposing counsel to determine if the sample was both truly random and representative of the population. Dan managed healthcare data received from counsel to both replicate and interpret filtering of claims within the scope of the litigation. He also created several macros to generate input files for manual reviewers to gather additional data based on imaged documents.
