John L. Baltz has more than 30 years of experience in a variety of areas including healthcare finance, analytics, operations, project/program management, and consulting. He leads teams to solve highly complex business challenges, drawing on his project and change leadership skills and expertise in revenue cycle management, strategic planning, data integration, and process design. John is adept at transforming complex data into decision-driving information and coordinating seamlessly across finance, technology, and operational groups.
Experience
John joined Ankura with the firm’s 2018 acquisition of c3/consulting, where he collaborated with a range of healthcare clients. He previously was a principal consultant with a healthcare data analytics company and earlier held senior managerial positions for various other healthcare companies. His healthcare career has been comprehensive, encompassing the complete industry lifecycle, including practice administration, billing and EHR hosting service, and claims processing. He is well-versed in application integration/implementations, revenue cycle management, healthcare analytics, and business integration.
John’s professional experience includes:
- Artificial Intelligence Application, Infusion Center: Developed a project plan and approach to effectively implement Ankura AI into an operational setting. Provided the framework and support necessary to develop and deploy an Ankura-hosted Enterprise AI environment with an employee portal to upload data, process through the AI engine, and complete operational tasks.
- Strategic Technology Planning, Health System: Led the creation of an enterprise information management strategy to address the current state and desired future state with a timetable to maintain the competitive advantages at an organization that deals with healthcare finances. John created the governance for implementing the plan over multiple years at the executive level.
- Operational Transformation, Supply Chain Management: Built an agile optimization process for system surgical operations to reduce supply costs and enhance scheduling efficiencies. Assessed overall situation and began coaching and guiding facility leadership through initiating and completing projects with over $4.4 million savings in on-going supply costs and preparing for $4.8 illion additional capacity for surgical cases.
- Analytics Platform Development, FQHC: Designed operational metric sourcing and reporting for a new analytics application used by Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC). John provided subject matter expertise on bringing raw data into the finished dashboard and analytics tools. He created an analytics spectrum that integrated and cross-referenced measures from financial, clinical, satisfaction reporting, and quality systems.
- Integrated Performance Dashboard, Healthcare Payer: Architected the integration of disparate data sets into efficient, accurate processing in a dashboard designed to reduce costs, increase quality, and improve the care experience. The project covered 720,000 members across 32 clinical locations and reduced the overall per-member per-month (PMPM) cost by more than $3.
- Systems Implementation, Retail Chain Store Corporation: Project and program managed Kronos upgrade. Responsible for managing the overall progress of internal development by IT teams in preparation for the upgrade and the overall implementation to completion. Coordinated teamwork around budgeting/forecasting/scheduling, timekeeping/accruals, attestation/compliance, absence/leave, and resporting/analytics for a successful roll-out to all retail operations store operators and regional hubs.
- Revenue Cycle Transformation, Health System: Served as a client-facing contact responsible for supporting the transition from current-to future-state work processes for all up-front collections and payment plan initiations. John designed the optimal combination of tools, processes, people, and industry standards for successful ongoing business operations while strengthening patient relationships. These efforts increased net collection rates by $8 million across 16 facilities and boosted operating profitability by reducing write-off rates, first-pass denials, and the costs to collect.
- Episode-Based Payment Initiatives, Bundled Payment Initiatives: Represented case management on a multi-disciplined team assessing payment models at 57 facilities. John led efforts to build integrated patient workflows supported by existing and newly developed technology, including coordinating with third-party vendors. Working within the PMO structure, he also led the ongoing project management efforts across multiple segments of a national healthcare system to integrate successful outcomes of clinical, financial, and technical inputs.
