The 9th Annual Workshop on Applications of Artificial Intelligence in the Legal Industry
About the Event
The legal industry faces significant challenges due to the exponential growth of data, resulting in increasingly complex legal cases that require accurate and efficient processing of vast amounts of information. Legal professionals have turned to artificial intelligence (AI) technology to streamline their work and improve their work product. However, the sheer volume of data in legal cases can often be overwhelming, with over 350,000 docket data cases brought to courts in the United States every year and typical antitrust investigations involving terabytes of data. This data must be processed and analyzed to derive new insights, make better judgments, and develop effective strategies in legal cases.
To address these challenges, the legal industry has increasingly embraced AI technologies, such as natural language processing and machine learning, to efficiently process and analyze large amounts of complex legal data, deliver legal services at reduced costs, and achieve satisfactory turnaround speed. Advancements in AI, including breakthroughs in machine learning, natural language processing, speech and image processing, and big data analytics, are transforming the legal industry. From automated contract drafting to intelligent legal robots, predictive coding to judicial analytics, and litigation outcome prediction to case management, AI and big data analytics are revolutionizing the legal industry.
New developments in generative AI (GenAI) and large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, are paving the way for revolutionary changes in the legal industry. As AI technology continues to seamlessly integrate into everyday life and workplaces, it is poised to profoundly impact the legal industry. However, concerns are being raised around the transparency and ethical implications of AI applications in the legal field, leading to regulatory issues aimed at mitigating unintended social consequences while still harnessing the competitive advantages and economic gains of these emerging technologies.
With the growing prevalence of AI and GenAI in legal big data, we recognize that there is a disconnect between the legal industry and academics who work with AI applications in big data. We are organizing this workshop to bridge the gap between practitioners and technology, promote the use of AI and GenAI in big data analytics in the legal field, and facilitate open and thoughtful dialogue on how these analytics can assist legal practitioners.
This workshop, held at the 2025 IEEE International Conference on Big Data, is intended to provide a platform for legal professionals, academics, and AI experts to share their insights and experiences, and to examine the intersection of law and AI. Our hope is that this workshop will help to expand and enhance the applications of AI in big data analytics within the legal industry.
Key Objectives:
- Bridge the gap between practitioners and technology.
- Promote the use of AI in big data analytics in the legal field.
- Facilitate open and thoughtful dialogue on how these platforms can assist legal practitioners.
- Provide a platform for legal professionals, academics, and AI experts to share their insights and experiences, and examine the intersection of law and AI.
By the end of this workshop, our goal is to help expand and enhance applications of AI in big data analytics within the legal industry.
