Daniel Hutchins is a Senior Director at Ankura, based in Chicago. He is a licensed forensic architect and expert witness specializing in building envelope and waterproofing failures, structural deficiency analysis, building code and standard-of-care interpretation, and the allocation of liability among owners, design professionals, and contractors in construction disputes.

Experience

Daniel serves as a testifying and consulting expert in construction-related disputes, with engagements spanning the full arc of professional liability litigation. He prepares expert disclosure and rebuttal reports, supports deposition and trial testimony, and develops attribution analyses that allocate responsibility among project participants to a reasonable degree of professional certainty.

His investigative work begins with the primary project record. He analyzes requests for information, change orders, submittals, design documents, specifications, and project correspondence to establish a documented, page-level basis for each opinion. He evaluates that record against the controlling contractual and regulatory obligations governing the parties. This approach allows him to identify the applicable obligation, demonstrate where it was or was not met, and connect any departure to its consequences for project cost, schedule, and the parties’ ability to perform.

In professional liability matters, Daniel evaluates whether design documents were complete and coordinated, whether construction conformed to the contract documents and applicable code, and how identified deficiencies affected the work. His technical depth lies in building science and building failures — including the investigation of building envelopes, structural deficiencies, and waterproofing deficiencies and moisture migration — where physical conditions are correlated with the documentary record to determine cause and responsibility.

He works extensively with American Institute of Architects contract documents, applying them alongside jurisdiction-specific building codes and recognized technical construction standards, including those published by American Society for Testing and Materials, among others. His opinions are structured to anticipate and withstand rebuttal, identifying the weakest evidentiary points before opposing counsel does.
