Grant Gochenauer is a Managing Director at Ankura and a strategic advisor with more than 20 years of experience improving the way clients plan, govern, and deliver capital projects, with a particular focus on data centers and mission-critical infrastructure. He partners with owners, developers, contractors, and lenders in highly regulated and complex sectors, including data centers and digital infrastructure, energy, manufacturing, life sciences, multi-family, and hospitality, to enhance project delivery, strengthen business controls, and improve financial and operational performance.
Experience
Grant advises clients across the full data center lifecycle, from site feasibility, power delivery, and budgeting through construction execution, commissioning, and closeout. His focus is the challenge at the center of today’s market: delivering gigawatt-scale, continuously accelerating builds with cost certainty, schedule predictability, and a defensible commercial position. He designs and implements the project controls, governance frameworks, and reporting systems that give executive leadership a clear, forward-looking view of progress, exposure, and entitlement on complex multi-phase, multi-trade programs.
Building on a foundation in general contracting, construction operations management, and forensic construction advisory, Grant designs and refines business controls that promote cost certainty, effective resource utilization, and reduced financial exposure. His approach to process standardization, cost management, productivity analysis, and change management delivers more predictable results in complex project environments, and he builds governance frameworks and cross-functional teams that embed best-in-class controls into day-to-day operations.
His experience spans estimating and budgeting, contract negotiations, procurement, cost management, contract compliance, resource planning, productivity analysis, cost reporting, change management, and scheduling, supported by deep familiarity with construction documents, plans, and specifications.
Grant’s professional experience includes:
- Provides schedule advisory and project-controls enhancement on hyperscale AI data center campuses, including P6 schedule development and integration, earned-value reporting, cash-flow modeling, and standardized field reporting that convert fragmented, reactive control environments into structured, forward-looking ones.
- Structures change, notice, risk, QA/QC, and owner-furnished / contractor-installed tracking to tie every issue to specific cost and schedule impacts, protecting entitlement and building a contemporaneous, defensible record on schedule-constrained builds.
- Serves as owner’s representative on distressed, capital-intensive, revenue-critical assets, delivering independent state-of-the-project assessments, cost-to-complete validation, vendor transition management, field supervision, and completion through closeout and operations.
- Provides program and project management advisory services for energy and industrial facilities, commercial properties, multi-acre campus renovations, and greenfield developments, coordinating among client personnel, counsel, lenders, designers, and contractors to maintain alignment with project objectives and requirements.
- Provides capital project advisory services on planned and active development projects across industry sectors, including contract evaluations, compliance assessments, specialty-consultant oversight, on-site progress monitoring, evaluation of loan advance requests, and executive reporting.
- Provides enterprise advisory services for construction and real estate development companies across the U.S. and Mexico, assessing standard operating procedures, identifying performance improvement opportunities, and implementing process definition and standardization, policy development, and market-expansion strategies.
- Provides construction advisory services to trade contractors, working with project and leadership teams to identify risks, develop mitigation plans, and actively manage implementation to reduce financial exposure.
- Performs independent review and analysis of scope changes, change orders, and associated cost and schedule impacts in support of active project management, insurance evaluations, and third-party cost validation.
- Managed profit and loss for a mid-size natural gas utility contractor with responsibility for all administrative personnel and union workforce, directing construction operations, including project management, field supervision, accounting, office administration, equipment maintenance, safety, training, business development, estimating, contract negotiations, union relationships, risk management, project controls, and execution of work.
