Muthu Chockalingam is a Senior Director at Ankura, based in Washington, DC. She has more than 15 years of experience in data analytics in the context of litigation, class actions, MDL, and settlement administration. Muthu has been involved in many high-profile mass tort matters ranging from telecommunications and outdoor retailing to workers’ rights and compensation and wildfire litigation, acting as both a project manager and a technical expert. She provides expert guidance and recommendations for all aspects of class action administration, from notice planning and implementation through disbursements.

Experience

Muthu’s professional experience includes:

  • AT&T Mobility Wireless Data Services Sales Tax Litigation (MDL 2147): Responsible for managing and distributing $1.2 billion in settlement proceeds to over 28 million individuals and businesses for state tax refunds. The national settlement fund, established pursuant to the global settlement of MDL No. 2147, involves state sales and gross receipts tax refund claims related to wireless internet usage from over 2,300 taxing jurisdictions and 45 states.
  • Bass Pro Class Action Lawsuit: Played an integral role in advising Class Counsel on damages calculation, produced reports to assist in expert testimony, assisted in the identification of potential class members, by analyzing customer data and summarizing numerical data to identify anomalies, and patterns from disparate datasets. Worked with clients to optimize the settlement administration process from notice through escheat.
  • Uber UK Workers Claims Settlement: Led a team that handles correspondence related to national minimum wage and historic holiday payment to current and former drivers, by designing and implementing a claimant support system, that has received and responded to approximately 108,000 inquiries to date and paid 52,000 drivers.
  • PG&E Wildfire Subrogation Trust: Developed sampling methodology to support the administration of the $11 billion Subrogation Wildfire Trust created as part of PG&E’s Chapter 11 Plan of Reorganization to compensate insurance carriers for indemnity payments made in connection with 2017 and 2018 California wildfires. Forecasted holdback percentages, calculated adjustment percentages, reconciled payments for over 220 beneficiaries, and actively contributed to disbursing about $10 billion to date.
