Dan Johnson is a Managing Director at Ankura with over a decade of experience executing corporate finance, restructuring, valuation, M&A, and recapitalization assignments, as well as operational restructuring and corporate planning initiatives. He has advised small- and large-cap public and private companies, corporate boards, special committees, financial sponsors, secured lenders and creditor committees across industry sectors, with a specific focus in the energy sector. He is based in Denver.

  • Experience

    Prior to joining Ankura, Dan was a director at a national boutique restructuring and financial advisory firm. Before that, he was a senior vice president at Houlihan Lokey, where he provided financial advisory services to clients in the energy, industrials, healthcare, retail and technology industries. He has broad experience valuing businesses and securities, preparing cash flow projections and business plans, evaluating solvency and liquidity, and conducting due diligence assignments on behalf of financial and strategic acquirers. He began his career in the audit and assurance practice of Deloitte & Touche.

    Dan earned both a BS and MS in business administration with an emphasis in accounting from the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he graduated with distinction. He is both a Certified Public Accountant and a CFA Charterholder and holds inactive FINRA Series 79 and 63 securities licenses. He is a member of the CFA Institute, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Turnaround Management Association and American Bankruptcy Institute.

    Dan’s professional experience includes:

    • Served as restructuring director for the seventh-largest grocery cooperative in the United States, consisting of 400 members and a retail grocery store chain. Assisted management and the board of directors with crisis and liquidity management initiatives, secured lender negotiations, developed forecasts and budgets, oversaw bankruptcy administration, and handled claims management.
    • Retained by the official committee of the unsecured creditors of a publicly traded oil and gas partnership in connection with the Chapter 11 restructuring of approximately $7.6 billion in debt. Prepared multiple financial analyses and provided perspectives to the committee regarding valuation, financial projections, and recoveries. Assisted the committee with negotiating and structuring a consensual plan of reorganization which included a ‘new money’ rights offering.
    • Acted as financial advisor to the special committee of the board of directors of a midstream partnership specializing in wastewater management, NGL and crude marketing. Advised the special committee on the proposed merger offers for its general and limited partnerships valued at $693 million.
    • Advised the lead counsel to the audit committee of a $20 billion specialty beverage company on the SEC’s inquiry into various valuation and accounting matters related to the company’s acquisition accounting. Played a key role in successfully convincing the staff to close the matter without action after a far-reaching inquiry lasting over four years.
    • Acted as financial advisor to the special committee of the board of directors of a publicly traded midstream company in connection with the $224 million initial public offering of the company’s fuel distribution master limited partnership subsidiary.
    • Served as investment banking advisor to a publicly traded oil and gas exploration company in connection with evaluating potential strategic alternatives and the restructuring of $2.35 billion in secured and unsecured debt.
