Robert J. Nowlin, Jr. (Rob) is a Managing Director at Ankura, based in Chicago. He has over 17 years of financial advisory, accounting, and valuation experience across most industries. This type of work includes forensic accounting, financial investigations, restructuring litigation, business valuation, solvency analyses, financial reporting, bankruptcy, damages, ability-to-pay, transaction disputes, financial accounting, application of U.S. GAAP and IFRS, and other highly complex accounting analyses.
Experience
His technical accounting and valuation expertise sits in several areas, including large-scale implementations of new accounting standards, business combinations, U.S. GAAP/IFRS conversions, consolidation assessments, leasing, fair value, accounting specialist for audit teams, Security Exchange Commission (SEC) reporting requirements, and significant accounting changes.
Rob has conducted business valuations for a variety of purposes, including for transactions, financial reporting, strategic advisory, damages, bankruptcies, solvency analyses, purchase price allocations, management planning, tax, distressed business valuation analyses, and other litigation purposes. He has valued businesses, business ownership interests, securities, intangible assets, and other assets.
In addition, Rob has been involved in all aspects of the transaction process, including deal sourcing, transaction structuring, valuation, due diligence, negotiations, financing, legal, and execution.
Prior to Ankura, Rob served as a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for a division of a public company and a private company where he was responsible for all of the accounting and financial activities, including financial reporting valuations, transaction valuations, controllership, forecasting, audit compliance internal controls, treasury, covenant compliance, reporting packages, margin expansion, board packages, and investment assessment.

Rob serves on the AICPA’s Forensic and Valuation Services Executive Committee and AICPA’s Financial Reporting Executive Committee. He participated in the development of the AICPA’s Accounting and Auditing of Digital Assets Practice Aid dated February 2025 and AICPA’s Accounting and Valuation Guide for Business Combinations dated 2024. Rob has received industry and peer recognition by earning the AICPA’s 2023 FVS Standing Ovation Award. He passed the Level I and Level II exams in the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Program.
Rob’s professional experience includes:
Bankruptcy, Damages, Forensic Accounting, and Solvency:
- Assisted in writing numerous expert and rebuttal reports for litigation matters involving bankruptcy, restructuring, solvency, forensic accounting, damages, financial investigations, and valuation.
- Performed accounting, financial analysis, valuation, and damage assessments across multiple industries and damage theories.
- Conducted financial modeling and valuation assessments of companies’ cash flows and debt service across different scenarios, incorporating sensitivity analysis.
- Performed complex solvency and accounting analyses regarding the solvency and financial condition of a mortgage company, including the three industry-standard solvency tests and a comprehensive valuation analysis.
- Assisted counsel on behalf of a private equity firm to assess the market value of assets, solvency, and financial condition of a media company on key dates and performed other financial analyses under U.S. GAAP.
- Engaged by general counsel representing a private equity firm and functioned as a forensic accountant to assist with the resolution of insolvency and bankruptcy issues, including the determination of whether “reasonably equivalent value” was paid for assets in fraudulent conveyance/transfer matters.
Transaction and Technical Accounting:
- Served as an advisor for numerous multinational companies for over 100 domestic and international transactions representing over $20 billion in total enterprise value under U.S. GAAP and IFRS. Some of the transactions are as follows:
- Supported a $17 billion transaction in the healthcare industry. The assistance included its full conversion from U.S. GAAP to IFRS, including identifying accounting differences and quantification of the conversion adjustments.
- Supported a $175 million transaction in the retail automotive service industry. The support included its full conversion from IFRS to U.S. GAAP, application of acquisition accounting, contract and software revenue recognition, multiple-element arrangements, and the integration of accounting policies and processes.
- Assisted by screening over 5,000 deals in numerous industries, performing due diligence on over 300 companies across most industries, executing over five recapitalizations by refinancing millions of debt, and completing over 10 investments and add-on acquisitions.
- Supported a Fortune 15 multinational technology corporation with early adoption of ASC 842, the new lease accounting standard under U.S. GAAP. This resulted in a $7 billion balance sheet impact.
- Assisted a $1.4 billion real estate asset manager to evaluate new accounting requirements under both U.S. GAAP and IFRS for revenue recognition, consolidation, and lease accounting including full conversion from U.S. GAAP to IFRS.
- Supported a significant business transformation at a Fortune 50 multinational aerospace and defense corporation through designing new operational processes and procedures due to a highly complex accounting change.
Accounting, Finance, and Valuation:
- Provided accounting, financial, and valuation analysis regarding the application of U.S. GAAP and IFRS.
- Developed over 10 portfolio company valuations on a quarterly basis to ensure U.S. GAAP compliance for a private equity firm.
