Tim Jones is a Managing Director at Ankura based in Chicago. He is an experienced economic damages consultant. Tim provides expert services related to breach of contract, fraud, and transactional analyses in connection with commercial disputes, regulatory matters, and healthcare disputes and investigations. Tim’s experience includes the preparation of expert reports, supporting data analyses, discovery materials, expert witness testimony, and trial presentation materials in numerous commercial damages cases involving lost profits, class action defense, and other breach of contract matters. Tim provides his services across various industries to external counsel, internal counsel, corporate boards, and corporate management.

Experience

Tim’s professional experience includes:

  • Assisted in the preparation of expert report and testimony for an arbitration involving a dispute over revenue sharing for two companies providing joint transportation services to customers. Reviewed historical financial statements and accounting policies, the FASB codification, and industry research to advise on the proper classification for revenues and expenses.
  • Assisted in the successful international arbitration defense of a $7.3 billion claim against a large component manufacturer as a result of the early termination of a two-unit nuclear generating station.
  • Reviewed historical regulatory and SEC filings to understand historical operations of the generating station. Developed operating assumptions and financial models required to project revenues and costs for 30 years of future operations. Formulated rebuttal positions to claimants’ operating assumptions and lost revenues projections.
  • Assisted in the preparation of the expert reports and deposition and trial testimony for the defense for a nuclear power plant contract termination dispute.
  • Assisted in the defense of a nuclear generation company alleged to have miscalculated $8.5 billion of fees necessary to comply with decommissioning requirements related to its nuclear generation fleet. Developed multiple, dynamic financial models to calculate funds required for decommissioning under various scenarios and determined the adequacy of funds placed in escrow to fund decommissioning costs. Findings were presented to the company’s board and NRC staff.
  • Provided research, damages calculation support, and testimony support in preparation for an expert’s deposition regarding the calculation of $56.8 million of damages for the partial breach of the Department of Energy’s contract to remove nuclear fuel from electric generating sites.
  • Participated in an independent review organization engagement for a dental management services organization. Created the database that contained the review procedures used to determine whether the claims were correctly coded, and the medical procedures were necessary. Calculated the overpayment for improperly billed claims. Analyzed and reported the findings to the client and counsel and assisted the drafting of the report that was provided to the Office of Inspector General.
  • Reviewed Medicaid pre-authorizations to determine if the need for dental services was properly documented by practitioners. Managed a team of eight people which performed the data entry for claims, implemented review methodology for data entry process, delivered feedback to improve claim review tool, assisted with the data validation process, and assisted in the development of queries in order to report findings.
  • Led a team which reviewed loan file documentation to obtain and report key metrics to support a mortgage underwriting expert’s conclusions regarding the appropriateness of mortgage approvals in support of expert testimony. Worked in conjunction with the clients to provide numerous types of reporting.
  • Reviewed mortgage deficiency claims brought against a sub-prime mortgage originator. Reviewed loan documentation to determine the validity of loan approval. Responded directly to the deficiency claims brought against the mortgage originator.
